Safety Management Systems

Having a safety management system (SMS) on a yacht is super important—it keeps everyone onboard safe, minimises risks, and helps meet all the necessary rules and regs.

Our SMS Process

All vessels should have a Safety Management System (SMS). We apply several structured steps to ensure the safety of crew, passengers, and the vessel itself. Here's an outline of the typical process.

01.

Audit

We review the current SMS (if there is one), regulations based on the vessel size and operation, and the type and condition of the safety equipment on board.

02.

Report & Plan

We create a report on the results of the audit with a recommended plan to implement an appropriate SMS for the vessel.

03.

Implement

Purchasing: We replace any outdated safety equipment and buy all necessary gear as per the plan.

Documentation: Comprehensive documentation is added to the YMS and will include;

  • Safety Equipment Type & Location
  • Operating Manuals & Procedures
  • Certificates & Licenses
  • Logbooks
  • Equipment Manuals
  • Warranties
  • Local authorities & contacts

04.

Maintenance

Record Keeping: Maintaining comprehensive records of safety-related activities, including inspections, drills, training, and incidents.

Maintenance: Implement regular inspections and maintenance of equipment.

Review and Update: Regularly update SMS based on reviews and changes in regulations or procedures.
